The New York State School Tax Relief Program (STAR) provides homeowners with two types of partial exemptions from school property taxes. If you earn less than $500,000 and own and live in your home, you’re probably eligible for the STAR exemption. There are two types of STAR exemption: Basic and Enhanced.
In addition, home owners can file for a property tax grievance, the following are some basic guidelines for property tax grievances:

Once a home is under contract, the homeowner can file a grievance

The filing deadlines in Nassau is March 1. Suffolk is always the 3rd Tuesday in May.

Your taxes will never go up because you file a grievance.

Your Star-Enhanced Star and Veterans exemptions are not affected by the tax grievance. Any savings is in addition to these exemptions.

An estate, a trust, a homeowner and a buyer under contract can all file a tax grievance. A corporation can NOT file.

A non-owner, rental property is not eligible.

You generally can file every two years for a tax grievance.
